Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a detour on his way back to Kansas City after watching Texas Tech in the NCAA Tournament championship game Monday in Minneapolis.

Mahomes was in Des Moines on Tuesday as the headline speaker at Hy-Vee’s “Exercising Your Character” event, which is aimed at keeping grade-school kids active.

While at the event, Hy-Vee announced a three-year partnership deal with Mahomes. The agreement includes television commercials, store appearances, collaboration on social media, apparel and “exclusive product launches at Hy-Vee grocery stores throughout the Midwest.”

“Hy-Vee has been a tremendous partner and supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs since 2009, and I look forward to working more closely with them on a personal level to bring even more awareness to Hy-Vee’s strong brand,” Mahomes said in a news release.

Among the products planned is a type of cereal. There were no details, but Mahomes’ agent, Leigh Steinberg, told The Star’s Brooke Pryor in January the name would be “Mahomes Magic Crunch.”

Hy-Vee has 20 locations in the Kansas City area.

On Monday, Mahomes announced an endorsement deal with Essentia water.
