University of Iowa sophomore Maddie Huntley will be helping out with communications for the Association this summer. Huntley, who is studying journalism and business, has interned for UnityPoint Health in Des Moines and Golden Openings in Urbandale, where she developed her skills as a writer, and gained experience with organizational web and social media communication. Her plans this summer include interning with the IGIA, being a nanny and working as an office assistant for the Iowa High School Press Association.

During her time at UnityPoint Health, she created social media posts, including stories and videos; wrote articles and testimonials; and edited a weekly hospital newsletter as well as assisted with a one-hour live media event on Channel 13 News. She also helped to promote the Healthy Kids Day annual spring event through social media and videography.

In addition to journalism, Huntley’s studies have included courses in AP calculus and financial accounting. Through her coursework and previous internships, she has gained experience with Adobe Creative Suites and the Microsoft Office suite of products.

“We are looking forward to having Maddie on board this summer and adding her creativity and talents to many of our communications,” says IGIA President Michelle Hurd. “Maddie is going to be a great addition to our team.”

Having grown up in Waukee and graduated from Waukee High School in May 2018, Huntley has returned there to live with her family for the summer. Her mother, Jill Huntley, works for Association and Legislative Resources in Des Moines and her father Paul Huntley works for Member Service Group in Urbandale, Iowa.

When she has any free time, Maddie enjoys swimming, reading and family trips to Clear Lake.

“I’m excited to be here. I’m looking forward to gaining new skills and making a positive contribution to the team here,” Huntley says. “I’m eager to use my skills to tell the great stories this Association has to share and to encourage its members to interact more through social media channels.”
