‘Food Friendzy’ helps donate items to local food pantries

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) – Three local celebrities raced around the Storm Lake, Iowa, Fareway on Wednesday for a very good cause.

The annual ‘Food Friendzy’ event raises money for five Buena Vista County local food pantries.

On Wednesday KTIV’s own Chief Meteorologist Ron Demers, KKIA ‘The Moose’s’ Jeff Jones, and JC Calles from JUAN Radio took part in the event.

They each had three minutes to grab as many items as they could.

Every item thrown into their grocery carts will be equally split and donated.

“There’s a lot of hungry people out there, and this helps feed the families,” said Jason Williams, Fareway Store Manager.

The Food Friendzy is also about reminding people food originally comes from the farmers and not the grocery stores.

The Friendzy takes place in March to recognize National Agriculture Month.

“We just thought it would be a fun way to bring some attention to it locally, and benefit the food banks, which definitely have a need,” said Richard Marshall, a Buena Vista County Farm Bureau Director.

This year Ron took home the shopping cart trophy, gathering over $1,400 worth of food items.

The overall amount collected from all three was over $3,400.

The event is sponsored by the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau, in partnership with other local businesses.
