Audrey Comer Joins Iowa Grocery Industry Association as Summer Marketing and P.R. Intern

There’s a new face here at the Iowa Grocery Industry Association. Audrey Comer, a senior in Advertising at Iowa State University, will be working on marketing and public relations for the Association throughout the summer.

In addition to a major in advertising, Comer is minoring in data science and political science. During her course of study at Iowa State, she has gained experience with programming, including R and HTML, as well as with creative media programs like iMovie and Adobe. She has been able to apply these skills to multiple real-world advertising campaigns that she got to work on as part of her classwork within the Greenlee School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Comer, who will graduate in December 2019, is no stranger to the grocery industry. She spent last summer as an intern for Hy-Vee, traveling to five states and 52 different Hy-Vee stores to perform equipment audits.

Comer also works part time for Hy-Vee in Ames while attending ISU and worked at the Indianola Hy-Vee store throughout high school. As a customer service clerk and checker for Hy-Vee, she’s always been eager to be a ‘helpful smile’ while juggling the multitasking that comes at a busy customer service desk.

“We are looking forward to putting all of Audrey’s talents to work forwarding our marketing and public relations efforts at the Association,” says IGIA President Michelle Hurd. “I’m confident Audrey’s skillset and enthusiasm are going to be great assets to our organization.”

Comer will be assisting with events marketing and promotion as well as public relations efforts designed to shine a light on the positive impact of the grocery industry in Iowa.

Having grown up in Indianola and graduated from Indianola High School in May 2016, Comer will be returning there to live with her family for the summer. Her father, Paul Comer, works for IGIA member Crossmark Sales and Marketing in Des Moines as a director of sales development and led the Grocery Manufacturers Association in Iowa for many years.

When she’s not working or studying, Comer says that she enjoys journaling, photography, and learning about the many things that fascinate her—“from geography to politics to art,” she says.

“I’m excited for this internship! I think it’s the perfect blend of duties to put my studies in advertising, political science and data science to work for an industry that means a lot to me,” Comer says. “I’ve been so fortunate to grow up in the state of Iowa, which is home to so many outstanding companies that truly care about delivering value to customers and growing hometown relationships.”
