Grab your quarter and get ready to shop. We’ve got the scoop!

Discount grocery store chain Aldi plans to build a new store in Grimes, according to plans filed with the city. It will be the company's eighth location in the Des Moines metro when complete.

The store will sit at the northeast corner of the East First Street and Highway 141 interchange, in one of the lots near the new Menards across the street from the Grimes Walmart.

The more than 22,000-square-foot store's appearance will resemble Aldi's newly opened Ankeny store and its store planned for Waukee.

There is no set opening date for the store. Matt Lilla, vice president of Aldi's Fairbault, Minnesota-based division, which includes the Des Moines metro, declined to comment on the project in an email Tuesday.

Once Aldi's planned Waukee and Grimes stores are open, the Des Moines metro will have eight Aldi locations.

A site plan for the new store passed the Grimes Planning & Zoning Commission last week. It went before the Grimes City Council Tuesday night.

The German grocery chain is known for its low prices, 25-cent rental shopping carts and customers bagging their own groceries.

The company is in the midst of a $3.4 billion push to expand to 2,500 stores nationwide by the end of 2022. In addition, Aldi is also spending $1.6 billion to renovate 1,300 existing stores nationwide.

Aldi's Iowa footprint currently includes 30 stores.
