Fareway bans employee tobacco use on company property

DES MOINES, Iowa — A major Iowa retailer has announced it will no longer allow its employees to use tobacco products.

As of Monday, Fareway Food Stores says it implemented a tobacco and nicotine-free policy that prohibits smoking and the use of any other tobacco or tobacco-like products such as electronic cigarettes and chewing tobacco on all company property.

Store officials said employees will only be allowed to use FDA-approved nicotine products aimed to help smokers quit.

“It is important to us at Fareway to create a healthy work environment for our employees and eliminating tobacco use from our campus is an integral part of that process,” said Caitlyn Ferin, a member of Fareway’s Corporate Wellness Team. “This is a key step in building a strong foundation for future wellness initiatives.”

Fareway operates more than 100 store locations in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
