Hy-Vee Seeking First LEED Certification Store in Iowa
Hy-Vee Seeking First LEED Certification Store in Iowa
March 3, 2010

Hy-Vee, Inc. will begin construction on a 64,000-square-foot replacement store this spring in Fairfield, Iowa, marking the company’s second store built in accordance with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification standards.

The West Des Moines, Iowa-based grocer opened its first LEED-eligible retail store in Madison, Wis., last October.

Hy-Vee previously had revealed plans to build the new store (almost double the size of the current store it replaces) at U.S. Highway 34 and South 14th Street, on a site formerly occupied by an Econofoods store and shopping center. Plans for the location haven’t been completed, but it’s expected to include a pharmacy with drive-up service, wine and spirits store, floral shop and food court with Chinese and Italian departments.

The opening of the Fairfield store is scheduled for spring 2011.

Hy-Vee is an employee-owned corporation operating 228 retail stores in eight Midwestern states. For 2009, the company recorded total sales of $6.4 billion, ranking it among the top 30 supermarket chains and top 50 private companies in the United States.
