IGIA Women in the Industry

The Iowa Grocery Industry Association launched the Women in the Industry group in March of 2014 to provide education, support, encouragement, leadership and networking opportunities to advance women in the grocery industry. It began as the Women in the Industry Coffee group, but a planning taskforce for the group later dropped “Coffee” from the title believing that it did not accurately reflect the group’s mission for the future.

Group Featurers Outstanding Speakers

The group has featured many outstanding speakers, including Iowa Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Rose Kleyweg Mitchell, former senior vice president of governmental affairs for Hy-Vee Inc. and Sandy Hatfield Clubb, Drake University athletic director during 2014. In 2015, the group brought in former Des Moines Police Chief Judy A. Bradshaw on Tuesday, January 13. The women in attendance tagged along with Bradshaw as she recalled the long road from dispatcher to chief of police.

Bradshaw was followed by Mary O’Keefe, consultant and retired senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Principal Financial Group, on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. On Tuesday, June 9, 2015, Mary B. Sellers, president, United Way of Central Iowa shared her professional journey with the group.

Donna Tweeten, Hy-Vee Inc. senior vice president, chief marketing officer brought the 2015 Women in Industry Group to a close last year on Tuesday, September 29 with laughter and lessons.

Women's Group Transforms in 2016

In 2016, the Women in the Industry group will undergo an exciting transformation as the taskforce breaks out of the morning coffee meeting format and plans half-day training sessions, networking events and community involvement activities in an effort to fulfill the group's mission to provide education, support, encouragement, leadership and networking opportunities to advance women in the grocery industry.
