The Iowa Grocery Industry Association, in conjunction with the Food Marketing Institute, wants to make sure all of its members and the general public is aware that the food industry has launched what could become a massive recall of products containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) due to Salmonella contamination.
The products feared to be contaminated were manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. since Sep 17, 2009. Please note that there have been no illnesses linked to these products and both the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider this a low-risk incident. Nevertheless, the FDA and United States Department of Agriculture are taking action on certain products containing HVP.
Specific information for the industry on what products are subject to recall can be found on the FDA’s Web site at www.fda.gov. This site explains in detail the three different types of products that may contain hydrolyzed vegetable protein and what to do if you have these products.
The general site for information on the HVP recall is also located on the FDA’s Web site at www.fda.gov. It is there where people can find links to a list of recalled products, advice for consumers and contact information for the FDA District recall coordinators should anyone need to talk to them.
Also, please remember that all of the requirements for reporting to the FDA Reportable Food Registry still apply. Information on the RFR can be found at www.fda.gov.
