Each year, the Iowa Grocery Industry Association strives to hold a memorable golf outing for members through the Fall Golf Classic. Last year, the annual event drew over 125 IGIA participants.
This year, the IGIA has decided to once again host the classic at the renowned Hyperion Field Club. Members of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association will have the opportunity to put their golf abilities to the test on Tuesday, September 13. Participants will be served lunch on the course prior to teeing off with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Dinner will be supplied following the outing in the Hyperion Field Clubhouse.
Jerry Fleagle, president of the IGIA shares, “Hyperion has an excellent reputation for having one of the top courses around, and we’re excited to be holding our event there again in 2011.”
The outing has been hosted at only three other clubs in its ten previous years. The Harvester Golf Club was the site of the inaugural event in 2001 and was also played in 2002. The Tournament Club of Iowa was the IGIA’s course of choice in 2003-2004, as well as 2008-2010, before going to Wakonda Country Club from 2005-07.
“Course selection has been very judicious from the very beginning,” Fleagle said. “The IGIA staff and Fall Golf Classic Committee want nothing short of the best for its members participating in this event.”
Hyperion Field Club was constructed in 1907 on the same grounds it rests on today. The course has undergone a few facelifts in the last 104 years, including its most recent project that was started in 1992 when many of the green surrounds were updated with new mounding and sand bunkers, new tees were constructed to accommodate a four-tee system, the 12th green was rebuilt, a pond was added on the ninth hole and the 14th hole was completely redone.
The greens are perhaps the most notable portion of the golf course considering the club takes great pride in having some of the most challenging putting surfaces in the Midwest. The bent grass fairways are narrow with many of them completely lined with trees. This is especially true for the third hole – a 547-yard par 5 that will test a player’s accuracy with its thin passage and well-bunkered green – and the 504-yard, par 5 sixth hole, which is considered to be the toughest the course has to offer.
At 130 yards, the 14th hole is the shortest on the course but possibly the most spectacular with its two ponds and connecting waterfall.
The overall course measures 6,423 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course is rated 72.1 by the United States Golf Association, from that same distance, with a slope rating of 127. The other three tee zones range in distances from 5,403 to 6,216 yards and have an average course ranking of 71.2.
