Iowa Grocers Education Foundation Awards 86 Scholarships, Endowment Fund Continues to Remain Strong
The Iowa Grocers Education Foundation received over 400 applications for the 86 scholarships that were awarded for the 2009-2010 school year. The IGEF awarded $32,850 in scholarship money itself to 25 students who are at least part-time employees for an IGIA member company or the children of a full-time employee working for an IGIA member. Special IGEF scholarships included three F.W. Beckwith Scholarships as well as one Mary I. Fitzgerald Award and one Robert Carper Jr. Award.
The IGEF was also delighted to award 61 “Piggyback” scholarships to employees working for IGIA member companies that set money aside to assist students within their organizations. The Grocery Manufacturers Association awarded two scholarships – one being the Ken Uglum Memorial Scholarship – and Gary’s Foods presented three Gary & Lucy Dietrich Scholarships. JW’s Foods also rewarded two of its own employees with scholarships while Perishable Distributors of Iowa provided four awards and Fareway Stores passed down 50 scholarships of $2,000 through the Beckwith Foundation.
Through the generous donations and hard work contributors instill into the IGEF Scholarship Endowment Fund, a total of approximately $106,832 was raised to help fund the scholarships awarded this past year. The biggest money maker of all was once again the IGEF Scholarship Golf Classic, which brought in more than $60,000. Additionally, another $31,696 was presented to the IGEF through the IGIA Convention Auction and Raffle.
Also helping fund the endowment were traditional contributors Kraft Foods ($2,000) and Mueller-Yurgae Associates ($1,700). Mueller-Yurgae also assisted in organizing the Mueller-Yurgae Associates Early Bird Golf Tournament at the IGIA Convention, which netted $1,470 for the fund. And an extra gift was provided this year by Johnson Brothers of Iowa. The wine and spirits distributor donated $9,966 to the Iowa Grocers Education Foundation after conducting a 60-day program specifically designed to generate money for the IGEF Scholarship Endowment Fund.
